jPod
The other night I caught the CBC premiere of their new series jPod. Darkly funny, funnily dark, excellent cast, quirky Vancouver locations, weed, quite enjoyable.
I have never read any Coupland, although I’ve always wanted to.
Anybody have an opinion on the books?

I’ve read most of his books and like most of them a lot. Pop culture is a big theme through his books—I bet you’d get a lot more of the TV references than I do! His earlier books (Generation X, Microserfs) are generally non-plot-driven, clever, and full of characters trying to figure out what it means to be a grown-up. Girlfriend in a Coma is an odd, SF-y story that I’m not sure works (the ending’s a bit overreaching), but has some interesting ideas. All Families are Psychotic, and Miss Wyoming are very fun, not-too-serious romps involving families. His more recent books are much darker (and IMO not nearly as enjoyable to read), with themes of alienation (through a Columbine-like shooting in Hey Nostradamus!) loneliness, and religion vs. secularism. jPod at first seemed to me like a knock-off of Microserfs (my favourite book of his), but it still is a good read; it’s a throwback to the fun romp stories—I imagine the series is much like the book.

Thanks, Laura.
The second episode was just as good. And they really hate drug dealers in the writers’ room at jPod.
