Joan of Arcadia

Saturday, September 25th, 2004

Fine season premiere last night.

There was a scene at the beginning with Joan and Adam in the park, when Joan was leaving and a skateboarder went by…

It’s a good show. You should watch it.

If you don’t, what are you, a communist?

Interesting Artist I Met

Friday, September 17th, 2004

During the Cabbagetown Festival last weekend I went out to see what was going on. I went down a sidestreet near my place to what looked like a yard sale.

As I approached the first thing I noticed was a sign that read ‘Avant Yard’. It was.

Most of the stuff on sale was works of art by a fellow named Les Paterson, one t.

Interesting multimedia (in the old beer can and cigarette paper sense) as well as paintings.

Besides the general interesting works he had on sale, he had a binder containing photos of a special category of his work: reproductions of Marge Simpson’s paintings, including ‘Homer Adonis’ and ‘Mr. Burns’, with mocked genitalia.

Check out his website.

And by interesting, I mean talented, imaginative and fun.

A-freakin’-Choo!!!!

Well, I thought my hay fever was going to be mild again this year (previous two really mild) but it really kicked in on Wednesday.

Classic symptoms, itchy watery eyes, sneezing, congestion, the whole schmier and kaboodle.

Yesterday morning, I sneezed so hard so many times (at least 10) that by the evening, my ribcage was sore, my throat was raw, it was hard to breath deeply or cough. I couldn’t even properly enjoy one of my favourite episodes of King of the Hill (Peggy accidentally kidnaps a little girl from Mexico during a class field trip across the border), or The Daily Show’s take on the Republican National Convention, because it hurt to laugh, kid I you not.

I’d been invited to dinner at a family of friends and I couldn’t go because I felt so miserable. Usually nothing gets between me and free food. It’s free!

Milder today. Expect daily detailed updates of my condition.

Be well.

Hero

Wednesday, September 1st, 2004

A friend took me to see Zhang Yimou’s Hero yesterday.

God damn, it’s got to be one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen.

A couple of scenes nearly had my crying, one for beauty, and one for sorrow. And I caught my breath a few times, leaning forward, eyes wide, anticipatory glee or dread running through my thoughts…

And it’s got Zhang Ziyi. And Maggie Cheung.

Absolutely cannot do it justice.

Just go see it.
