I’ve noticed something. And it’s getting worse.

It started with American marketing, and it infected us (here in Canadia) and now we do it too.

Television commercials show really stupid people not using the product, and then the same people actually using it. Don’t matter what the product is, stupid people are encouraged to use it.

This is considered proper and successful advertising technique. There are awards for it. Really.

Now the Prezadint wants to amend the Consititution to ban gay marriage, which according to the White House dot org, includes “converting the Constitution from a document that restricts the power of government into one that limits the so-called freedoms of individuals”.

It’s like an very special hour-long episode of The Simpsons with guest voices Michael McKean, James Carville, Mary Matalin, Candace Gingrich, Quentin Crisp, Harvey Fierstein, and all their parents, with special guest voice, Whoopi Goldberg.

Okay, the system is idealistic to start with; the checks and balances don’t always work, and venal human spirits can wreak havoc across the board.

Specifically embedded are the rights of appeal and multiple levels of the judiciary so that a condemned soul has a way out. Again, it doesn’t always work, but that’s better than no-right-of-appeal and he-wouldn’t-have-been-sentenced-to-death-if-he-wasn’t-really-guilty-it-only-stands-to-reason.

But what can weaken the system can also work in its favour. There’s always good people with connections among the venal, and the venal can always wrap themselves in the Constitution - and the law - if they’re losing. Expensive lawyers can be had, but so can pro bono lawyers, but had with pro bono doesn’t have the sexual overtones of expensive.

Truly good people are naive and susceptible to manipulation and misdirection within the system (True; watch Law and Order).

So, earnest, venal and naive, there you are.

The fat suits making the effort are rich, White male Republicans and their amenable, affable White-women wives, and a crowd of ordinary citizens whose sense of empathy is misdirected, or atrophied or co-opted.

And in this context, White is not a colour of skin, it’s a way of life.

If it’s gay marriage now, then it’s “mixed marriage” next. Then, with technology’s advances, it’s sci-fi eugenics. Genetic Republicans. Fine-tuned, generation by generation.

The Republicans will be running TV ads soon, mark my words.

This is Canadia. It’ll be Viet Nam all over again.
