A Sense of Perspective And Dreams of Greatness

From page 20 in today’s issue of the local free paper ‘Metro’, the caption to a photo showing two men in Renaissance garb brandishing flaming swords, promoting the Sterling Renaissance Festival in Sterling, New York;

“The only historical re-enactment of 16th-century England in the Finger Lakes Region, the festival has been selected as one of the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association.”

This Embarrassment of Riches Is Just Embarrassingly Rich

Okay, so I have IM accounts for AIM and ICQ, two main email accounts, orkut, this blog, this and others’ blog comments, et cetera. Et cetera includes but is not limited to, real-time telephony, telephony facilitated voice messaging, SMS text messaging, and further et cetera.

Here’s the thing. When I want to communicate something to someone, for example remind Reid to look for MS Project, how do I do it, id est, which method do I use? What social priority or weight is given to each one, by me or by him? After all, in communicating with him, his perception of the message and his attitude towards the medium or sub-medium should be taken into consideration.

How public is the communication going to be? Does it matter if it is public? And if it does matter, then how private should it be?

Do I want the communication to remain on file somewhere, or is an ephemeral flash in the virtual aether enough?

Is talking about a specific message in a universally accessible forum acceptable?

Aw, screw it. He’ll probably just read this anyway. Hey, Reid, howzabout that MS Project there, buddy. And my best to the family.

Wish Me Luck. And Knowledge. And Wisdom.

Well, I write my next certification exam on Friday afternoon. This one is for MCP for Windows 2000.

The book is heavy, and we didn’t have enough time to really study it, sometimes doing two chapters in one day. Each chapter involved viewing a PowerPoint slideshow and a Q&A with the instructor.

Like the two books we covered for A+ (Hardware and OS), there were online chapter tests (intranet), which counted towards our course mark, plus hands-on exercises from the book, and any number of on-line (internet) sample exam questions, plus locally installed sample exam questions from four or five different sources.

They’re hard.

This is interesting, and important, no question, but why, oh why, can’t it be easy?!

Nah, I’m kidding. The hard part is good, and I like the studying.

I could only wish for more simulations (faked stuff so as to not adversely affect an actual running system; I know they’re out there, I wonder why we don’t do them…) and more time.

I expect comments for this one, people. Paw-Zaw-Tiv comments, grok? Tell your friends.

Thank you in advance, I remain your humble servant

David “A+ (In Hardware And OS, If Not In Life)” Barker

PS, Happy Birthday Michelle! (Yes, that Michelle…)

Update: Thursday, May 6, 11:09am, I just rescheduled my exam for next Friday, May 14, because the sample tests we’re doing are very tough. Very tough. But I know you’re all still with me.

Update: Tuesday, May 11, 12:52pm, I rescheduled again, next Thursday this time. One of my classmates (one of the smart ones) came back from writing the exam with horror stories about taking it right down to the two and a half hour time limit with no time left to review his answers or missed questions. I really need more time to study, way more time. I won’t reschedule again though. I have to do it eventually so…

Update: Wednesday, May 19, 2:58pm, Okay, I wimped out again. I said I wouldn’t and I’m not supposed to, but I rescheduled my Windows 2000 exam again to next Thursday at 1:00pm (13 o’clock). The sample tests are the main reason. I keep getting 30% to 50% on them, and half the time I don’t know why I’m wrong! More later. Jeezes.
